Arlo’s Beatnik Review of Peet's Coffee

By Arlo Agogo

Man, dig this scene: It’s 1966 in Berkeley, the air thick with revolution, poetry, and the first real whiff of something beyond the weak, watery drip that passed for coffee in America.
Alfred Peet, that Dutch cat with fire in his soul, opens his shop and drops dark-roasted truth bombs on the squares. Peet’s Coffee wasn’t just beans—it was a manifesto. Bold, unapologetic, roasted deep to unleash the soul of the bean.
No wonder it lit the fuse for what became the whole specialty coffee jam.
I’m Arlo, your beatnik guide through the fog of mundane reviews. While the straight cats online drone on about “notes of chocolate” and “balanced acidity,”
I’m here blowing the horn on the vibe.
Peet’s hits different—it’s got that old-school craft, that West Coast cool. If you’re 35 to 55 and you remember when coffee was an experience, not an app order, Peet’s speaks your language.
But here’s the real gas: with 75 other roasters waiting on my Arlo Marketplace coffee category page
Peet’s is just the opening set.
Come for the legacy, stay to dig the wild variety from small-batch artists and global finds. Shop around, click those links, let the variety sing.

Peet's Coffee Variety.

  • Major Dickason’s Blend: This is the heavyweight champ, the dark roast that built the church. Named for a loyal customer who helped perfect the blend, it’s earth, spice, and everything nice in a cup that hits like a Coltrane solo—deep, complex, full-bodied. Rich chocolate undertones, no bitterness, just pure roast poetry. It’s the one you reach for when you need to face the day with soul intact. Peet’s flagship doesn’t mess around.
  • Big Bang® (Medium Roast): Boom! This one’s the explosion of fruit tart, milk chocolate, and graham crust vibes. Smoother than a beat poet’s verse, balanced richness that wakes you without the jitters. It’s the gateway for those easing into darker realms—bright enough to dance, substantial enough to ground you. A crowd-pleaser with real swing.
  • French Roast: Classic dark beauty—velvety, smoky, with that bittersweet chocolate edge. Peet’s takes the French style and makes it their own: bold, intense, yet surprisingly smooth. Perfect for French press or pour-over when you want to channel existential contemplation over a strong cup. It’s the beret of coffees.
  • Arabian Mocha-Java: Ancient blend vibes—Ethiopian Mocha meets Java. Chocolate, dried fruit, warm spice. This one’s got history, mystery, and that exotic jazz flair. Complex layers that unfold like a good Kerouac ramble. Ideal for those who like their coffee with a story and a soul.
  • Sun Catcher™ (Bright/Light Roast): For the daylight cats—strawberry jam, honeysuckle, citrus. Brazil and Kenya team up for a lively, fruity number that shines without scorching. It’s the cool morning light cutting through the fog, refreshing and vibrant. Don’t sleep on Peet’s lighter side; it swings.
  • Single Origins (Sumatra, Kenya, etc.) and Decafs: Peet’s single-origin drops let the terroir sing—earthy, herbal Sumatra or bright, berry-bomb Kenya. Their water-processed decafs (like Decaf Mocha-Java) keep the flavor without the buzz. Exploration in every bag.
Peet’s stands tall as the original craft revolutionaries, but the real adventure starts when you wander my

Arlo Marketplace Coffee Category.

Seventy-five roasters strong—small-batch rebels, rare origins, experimental blends. Why settle when you can sip the world? Click through, compare, brew experiments.

Talking Caviar with Arlo

Petrossian Caviar is special.
BY Arlo Agogo

Hey there, you fancy-pants beatniks, velvet-robed rebels, and midnight caviar dreamers! Dig this far-out scene from the Arlo Marketplace Seafood category

While the marketplace grooves with a cool lineup of fresh oysters, wild salmon, and sustainable shellfish from across the waves, one name stands out like a diamond in a bowl of plain oatmeal: Petrossian

This ain't your everyday fish eggs, man — this is luxury caviar that whispers "you're living the high life" with every pop on your tongue. The Legendary Origins of Petrossian Caviar – A Fairy TalePicture Paris in 1920, cool cats.

Two Armenian brothers, Melkoum and Mouchegh Petrossian, roll in from exile and decide the City of Light needs some serious sparkle. They bring Caspian sturgeon gold straight to the boulevards and boom — they introduce caviar to Western Europe like jazz hitting the Left Bank.

What started as one boutique exploded into a family saga of hand-selected, expertly matured Beluga, Ossetra, Sevruga, and more. Over a century later, the Petrossian clan still runs the show with that old-world savoir-faire mixed with smart sustainable farming.

No wild overfishing drama here — just pure, eco-conscious indulgence shipped worldwide. Exaggeration? Nah, this is the real poetic truth, man. Why

Petrossian Caviar Feels Like Wearing a Tuxedo.

Listen up, you glamorous gourmands with your silk robes and chilled vodka glasses. Most seafood in the Arlo Marketplace keeps it real and accessible — think beachy Hood Canal oysters or wild Alaskan salmon for your everyday feasts. But Petrossian?

Oh honey, this one's for the fancy-pants crowd who want to elevate their next gathering from "nice spread" to "the Tsar himself would applaud.

"Their Beluga Hybrid hits with legendary buttery richness, Ossetra brings nutty, fruity pops that dance like a Coltrane solo, and Sevruga delivers that firm, briny zing.

They age the caviar in secret temperature-controlled rooms (a family mystery), tasting every batch daily so it arrives at peak perfection.

Pair it with their smoked salmon, foie gras, or wild truffles and suddenly your kitchen table becomes a Parisian salon. It's chef-level, over-the-top luxury without the pretentious nonsense — just pure, exaggerated ocean bliss in every tin.

Plenty of solid companies sling fresh catches, but Petrossian stands apart as the crown jewel for those moments when only the finest will do.

Click through, order a tin of Tsar Imperial grade, and have it overnighted — live like the legends without leaving your pad. Support a family business that's been perfecting this art since the Roaring Twenties while keeping sturgeon populations sustainable.

Your next dinner party?

It'll be the stuff of underground legend. The Ultimate Caviar Experience – Comedy, Exaggeration & Pure Joy.

Imagine this: You're hosting a late-night poetry reading. The squares bring chips and dip. You? You crack open a Petrossian tin, spoon those shimmering pearls onto blinis with a whisper of crème fraîche, and watch jaws drop faster than a bad metaphor.

One bite and — whoosh! — mild salinity, silky texture, and that long, elegant finish make you feel like you've time-traveled to a 1920s Parisian salon while wearing fuzzy slippers. It's ridiculous how good it is. Over-the-top? Absolutely.

Worth every luxurious penny? You bet your beret.

So swing by the Arlo Marketplace Seafood section today, spot the Petrossian listings, and treat yourself (or your fanciest friends) to something truly special.

While the category has many excellent seafood companies, Petrossian is the one that turns ordinary nights into extravagant, laugh-out-loud celebrations of flavor.

Slurping the good life, one exquisite egg at a time.

Discovering Red Wagyu

By Arlo Agogo

If you're a beef enthusiast always on the hunt for exceptional flavor, tenderness, and a truly unique eating experience, allow me to introduce you to.......

Red Wagyu, also known as Akaushi cattle.

This premium Japanese breed is gaining attention among foodies and home cooks alike, and for good reason. While it may not yet be common on every marketplace, its rich history and superior qualities make it worth seeking out.

Akaushi cattle, colloquially called Red Wagyu or Japanese Red, originate from Kumamoto, Japan. For centuries, Japanese ranchers selectively bred these cattle for balance, consistency, and exceptional meat quality.

Akaushi is one of the four main Wagyu breeds—all Wagyu are Japanese cattle, but not all Wagyu are Akaushi.

This distinct red breed earned a reputation as the “Emperor’s Breed” thanks to its intense marbling and buttery flavor. The breed remained exclusive to Japan until the mid-1990s, when a small herd of seedstock was exported to Texas.

These foundational animals helped establish American Akaushi herds.

Today, operations like Desert Mountain cattle raise descendants of these imports. Their cattle are DNA-verified to be half Akaushi, blending the best traits for outstanding beef.

Japan's Red Wagyu

What sets Red Wagyu apart?

Its genetics promote remarkable intramuscular marbling—that beautiful web of fat within the muscle. This creates a melt-in-your-mouth texture far superior to conventional beef.

The fat profile is rich in monounsaturated fats, including high levels of oleic acid (the same healthy fat found in olive oil). This contributes to a rich, buttery, umami-packed flavor while offering potential heart-health benefits compared to higher saturated fat meats.

Akaushi beef is often described as sweeter and more balanced than black Wagyu, with excellent tenderness due to finer muscle fibers and higher marbling. It excels in both grain-finished and grass-fed systems.

Breeds like those at Desert Mountain thrive on pasture, producing 100% grass-fed and finished beef that’s sustainable and flavorful. Ranchers also praise Akaushi for hardiness, longevity, fertility, and efficient growth with less external fat and larger ribeyes—translating to better yield and quality grades.

In the kitchen, Red Wagyu shines whether grilled as steaks, seared as ribeyes, or slow-cooked. The marbling bastes the meat from within, keeping it juicy even at medium doneness. It’s a favorite for special occasions, date nights, or elevating everyday meals.

You might not find many (or any) sellers offering pure Red Wagyu yet—it’s still a bit of a hidden gem with strong Japanese roots—but interest is growing.
